Kansas Engineering: A Sophisticated Design

Kansas Engineering

Engineering is a bright and fundamental sector of the Kansas economy and business climate. In Kansas, a greater percentage of the population are engineers than in the rest of the nation. Kansas has strengths in certain engineering specialties including, aerospace engineering, industrial engineering and agricultural engineering.

“Engineering businesses in Kansas help provide the state with workers who are skilled in technological and innovative manufacturing and design,” said Kansas Commerce Secretary Antonio Soave. “This helps to recruit engineers and businesses to the state, as well as attract investment from other states and countries.”

Kansas has three universities that offer undergraduate and graduate engineering programs including Kansas State University, Wichita State University and the University of Kansas.

“In addition to the successful businesses that make up Kansas’ engineering industry, the value of Kansas’ engineering sector is driven through three of its major universities,” said Secretary Soave. “The state of Kansas is a haven for professional engineers. This is a great place to gain relevant and innovative experience in various types of engineering.”

Kansas State’s College of Engineering gives would-be engineers an outstanding undergraduate education with experience in various sectors such as energy, health, and infrastructure and information technology. K-State also offers an Engineering Leadership and Innovation Program, which trains upper classmen in the skills needed to be successful in the workplace. K-State also plans to add 35 members to their engineering faculty in the next five years, to ensure the university continues to provide a high-quality engineering education.

The University of Kansas’ School of Engineering offers 12 undergraduate, 19 Master’s and 11 Doctorates in various engineering programs. KU provides an engineering student with the opportunity to work in state-of-the-art facilities, the chance to work with talented faculty and participate in innovative research. KU instills in students a strong and industry-driven education, while allowing students to pioneer new technologies.

Wichita State University boasts an impressive College of Engineering as well, which houses six degree-granting departments including aerospace, biomedical, electrical engineering and computer science, engineering technology, industrial and manufacturing and mechanical engineering. The award-winning facilities at Wichita State prepares engineering students with an advanced education and the resources necessary to create and apply cutting-edge knowledge.

“The impeccable work of these three Kansas universities speaks to the level of sophistication and skill of Kansas engineers,” said Secretary Soave. “These industry-educated students, whom possess the most current and technologically advanced skillset are funneled into Kansas companies. This builds the strength and credibility of engineering both at our universities and in our business climate.”

The array of engineering specialties and degree programs available to Kansans has allowed for excellent location quotients for aerospace engineering (2.85 location quotient), industrial engineering (1.36 location quotient) and agricultural engineering (1.25 location quotient).

“Kansas’ diverse economy, as well as its world-class engineering research and educational institutions creates an outstanding engineering occupational cluster,” said Secretary Soave. “The engineering sector in Kansas continues to grow and prosper, thanks to the successful businesses and universities that lead the industry.”

The state of Kansas is making substantial investments into growing and enhancing its engineering businesses and workforce to help companies and universities meet their future needs.
